Units arrived to find fire shooting hundreds of feet into the air and quickly closed off the entire area. People reported that the fire was visible for up to 10 miles away and lit up the entire night sky.

Emergency units evacuated residents living close to the scene until crews from UGI Gas arrived on the scene and shut down the 8 inch main that was feeding the fire. Once the main was shut down, the fire eventually burned itself out at approx. 05:30hrs. Crews from numerous agencies including UGI and a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall remained on the scene well into the afternoon investigating the cause of the explosion.

The blast occurred in a small building where highly pressurized natural gas is transferred from a 10,500 mile National Transcontinental Pipeline to a local system that is operated by UGI Penn National Gas. A spokesperson from UGI also said that no customers were affected during the incident due to a backup system that is in place. No injuries were reported during the incident and no damage was done to any buildings or homes.

Due to the nature of the incident, numerous agencies were called upon to assist in the investigation including the FBI, PPL Electric, DEP, ATF, Luzerne County EMA and the Red Cross. At this time, it is reported that the blast looks to be accidental and there is no reason to believe the fire is suspicious but a specific cause has not been released yet. It was also said that explosions at transfer centers are uncommon.

Assisting the Wright Twp. Fire Dept. were Companies from Fairview Twp., Rice Twp., Dorrance Twp., White Haven, Dennison Twp., Valley Regional, Hazle Twp., Hobbie, Slocum Twp. and Pond Hill. BLS Units that assisted were Mt. Top., Slocum Twp., Ashley and White Haven as well as ALS Units from Hanover Twp. (M-9), White Haven (M-22) and Spellman (M-19).
